Activity: Build blends

Paper plates, marker, penny

30 minutes

Write the consonant blends on individual paper plates: bl, cl, fl, pl, br, cr, dr, gr, pr, tr, sm, sp, sn, sw, and st. Spread the plates across the floor and take turns with your child throwing a penny onto one of the plates. For each plate the penny lands on, you or your child must think of a word that begins with that blend. Say it, spell it and use it in a sentence.

You can also play this game with consonant digraphs (a pair of consonants that stand for a single sound): ch, sh, th, wh.
