Activity: Rain stick

Materials:
Mailing tube, packing tape, assortment of sound makers (nails, popcorn kernels, sand, gravel, beads, etc.) and decorations (colored paper, stickers, ribbons, glitter glue and so on)

Help your child make his own version of a rain stick:

  1. Fill the mailing tube with the assortment of "noise" items to about 1/4 inch from the top.
  2. Seal the tube tightly with the packing tape.
  3. Decorate the outside of the tube.

When finished, move the tube slowly from side to side, up and down. Listen to the noise it makes. Encourage your child to experiment with ways to create different sounds with the rain stick.
